BOOK REVIEW:

See my Book Review published at amazon.com

Dennis Littky's, The Big Picture is a portrait of how school should look-at least to Littky. The book is a brief description of Littky's work as cofounder of New Hampshire's Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, "The Met," and its many successes as an alternative to traditional schooling. But there is much more to it. The Big Picture is also a very critical look at the issues that America faces with its broken and failing education system. Every chapter ends with a handful of very deep and thought provoking questions that every educator, policy maker and parent should be asking of their local schools. The book is also filled with anecdotes, student writing and articles that support the idea of student directed learning. And finally, the book ends with a chapter entitled "Make It Happen," where readers are encouraged to begin looking at how to effect positive change in a school that does not want to change. Overall, The Big Picture is a very positive look at what can be done with a different approach, a little effort and the willingness to change.

FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY:

With regards to technology in education, I see two distinct changes. First, I see the desktop disappearing in most cases. The laptop will fall by the wayside quickly and be replaced by a smaller, much more powerful handheld computer, with all of the same capabilities, in the form of a PDA/smart phone. Voice-to-text will replace the need for a keyboard and other inputs. Schools will also finally bow to the mounting pressure and allow these devices to be used on campus.

The next major change will be the demise of the traditional campus and compulsory seat time. Students of all ages will have the freedom to choose their classes/instructors/schools cafeteria style. No more sitting in the back of history class falling asleep (though I never did that). As we have recently seen with the Musion holography, the potential for an instructor to come right into your home is literally here, now we just have to apply it effectively. School yards can become parks and libraries and performance arenas, and the mean old cafeteria ladies can retire and smoke their days away.

Maybe not on the 10-year list, but definitely a possibility, is the transformation of what we teach and learn. A shift in focus from wrote learning to that of skills development and knowledge acquisition, and far away from individual learning and towards collaboration and just-in-time learning. This will be a necessary shift as the need for human labor will continue to diminish and be replaced with automation, mechanization and AI. The only thing humans will have left will be compassion, ingenuity and their own intellectual property.

We're on the cusp of some huge life changes, I can't wait to see what comes of it.
